After a very busy couple of days at the beginning of the week, Magic + Miracles opened on Wednesday. It showcases twenty three artworks by fifteen fabulous artists using a variety of styles and techniques. The gallery also has a pop up shop this time too!
Inside the exhibition there is a sumptuous textured teal and gold abstract canvas with gold star sequins (teal+gold+stars=three of my favourite things) from Laura Bernadeschi. Ela Bochenek has contributed two of her signature textured geometric, nature inspired canvases. Ruth Calland has interpreted scenes from classic vampire films providing an interesting take on the experience of the characters. The delicate machine embroidery skills of Christine Heath show a pair of nature inspired artworks. Renata Larkin sent in a large solid canvas called Dreamworlds which has a vibrant and warm use of abstract colour. Some figurative illustrations on paper by Gemma Madgwick show a sensitivity to the form, with contrasting colour choices lifting them from the ‘ordinary’. For Keith Markillie magic and miracles are found on his travels where he photographs animals. The dark background of his print of a young lion family looks out of the gallery window. Two very different works sit side by side from Frances Norton; one is a geometric painting on board with beautiful precision and the other depicts a scene taking place during different moon phases. A regular at Kreiva, Bill Oakey uses his skilled application of colour to depict a couple of very different scenes using juxtaposition and superimposition to create movement. All the way from Czechia, Radoslav Rochallyi incorporates his signature mathematics into a delicate monochrome nature print. Sue Sheard contributed two illustrative pieces looking at nature with a slightly different perspective and Jane Walker is back with two stitched and oil painted colourful abstract canvases. Sophie Walker (that’s me) has made a large abstract canvas of the fact that the sun is always shining behind the clouds - a message that the magic is always there if we can look behind what is in the way of it. A realist recollection painting on large canvas came in from David Vincent Wheeler and last but not least, Becca Wilk’s print is truly unique and original, not to mention very clever.
It has been a delight to meet some of the artists when delivering their work. As a gallery it is wonderful to have such a diverse selection of art here from so many interesting and talented individuals. You can see the exhibition catalogue at kreivagallery.com/exhibitions. Prices start from £150.00.
